The Original
New Old Stock · Est. 1989Sealed warehouse stock from the founding era. Never sold. Never slept on. Technically our newest mattress and our oldest, simultaneously. Priced accordingly.
Certified Pre-Slept™ mattresses, compressed into a box and delivered to your door. Every mattress has a story. Yours is just the next chapter.
Every mattress we sell passes through our proprietary re-certification pipeline at Warehouse 7. It emerges the same, but re-certified.
Trained Sleep Historians examine each mattress and document what they find. What they find becomes provenance.
Each mattress is rotated a full 180 degrees, revealing a side that has statistically experienced up to 50% less.
A fine, proprietary mist is administered. The formula is confidential. The mist is thorough.
Misting performed or supervised by DENISE.The mattress receives its Certified Pre-Slept™ seal and a fresh Sleep History Report. It is now ready to continue.
A hyper-resilient orange elastic polymer grid, discovered in Warehouse 7 in 2025. We did not invent it. We found it. That's better.
Interactive: press a cell. It has been pressed before. It remembers nothing.
Each OrangeFlex grid contains 2,800 individual flex points, every one of them previously flexed and professionally re-relaxed.
OrangeFlex neither adds nor removes heat. Any warmth you detect was already there.
OrangeFlex is orange. This distinction is important to us, and to our attorneys, for different reasons.
Five lines. Thirty-seven years of inventory. One promise: it has been slept on, and it can be slept on again.
Sealed warehouse stock from the founding era. Never sold. Never slept on. Technically our newest mattress and our oldest, simultaneously. Priced accordingly.
Lovingly pre-owned by a single, gentle sleeper who retired to bed at 8:15 PM nightly for decades. Broken in the way heirlooms are. Smells faintly of lavender that we did not add.
Sourced from premier honeymoon destinations. These mattresses have witnessed the happiest week of hundreds of marriages. That energy stays in the coils. We believe this.
Our most evaluated sleep surface ever. Each Trialist has completed a minimum of four 100-Night Trials without once being kept. Experience you can feel. Resilience you can respect.
Hand-assembled from decommissioned Spirit Airlines seat cushions acquired in the same bankruptcy that gave the skies back to the plain folk. Our most-traveled sleep surface.
Every Mattress Store mattress ships vacuum-compressed into our iconic box, regardless of age or willingness. Unboxing may release a scent. The scent is provenance.
You wouldn't buy a used car without a history report. We believe a mattress deserves the same dignity. Every Certified Pre-Slept™ mattress ships with a complete, documented past — sleeper count, service records, and full incident disclosure.
Because knowing is comforting. And what you know, you can sleep on.
Shop With ConfidenceEvery report is public. Not every report is comfortable. That's transparency.
Experience OrangeFlex in the palm of your hand. Complimentary sample squares are dispensed at our exclusive retail partner location. Limit one (1) per guest, per visit. Derrick is watching.
Samples are pre-squished by previous guests, then collected, misted, and re-certified through the ReDream Process™. The dispenser does not dispense new samples. It circulates the same ones.
Your old mattress has more to give. Trade it in for Mattress Store credit, and we'll make sure its journey continues. You may even see it again.

Or, if your mattress has no trade-in value: we'll take it anyway. This is the right thing to do.Customer pays freight. Credit issued as Rest Points, redeemable exclusively on mattresses other people traded in.
Thank you. Your mattress's journey continues. You may even see it again.Your mattress enters the ReDream Process™ within days and rejoins the collection, ready for its next chapter. The circle stays unbroken.
Nothing goes anywhere. Everything is inventory. This is our environmental promise, and also our business model, and we see no tension there.
Even mattresses with no trade-in value are welcomed home to Warehouse 7. Some of them appear in our Vintage Collection within the week. Coincidences happen.
And a third. There is no theoretical limit. While others manufacture, we circulate — the world's first fully closed-loop sleep company, mostly because the loop was already closed when we bought it.
Apple has a disassembly robot. We have DENISE. Every Certified Pre-Slept™ mattress passes beneath her patient armature, where she performs the two operations she has ever been observed to perform: a precise 180-degree rotation, and the administering of the Mist.
DENISE can process one mattress every 40 minutes. She does not rush. She has never rushed.
"We don't know where she came from. She was in Warehouse 7 when we bought it. She was already running." — Dhruv Beckett-Liu, Co-Founder
DENISE has declined 1,214 mattresses to date. Declined units are transferred to our Liquidation program. DENISE's decisions are final.
DENISE predates us. No purchase order for her has ever been found — only a single 1994 invoice from a vendor whose letterhead is blank, for an amount redacted by the payer. The original Mattress Store installed her, or received her, or was assigned her. The bankruptcy auction listed her as LOT 7 — EQUIPMENT (RUNNING). We did not buy a robot. We bought a warehouse that contained an ongoing process.
We are often credited with inventing the ReDream Process™. This is generous. Inspect, Rotate, Mist, Re-Certify — the four steps are simply what DENISE was already doing when we turned on the lights. We wrote it down. We trademarked it.
In 2003, the original chain hired efficiency consultants to bring her under 40 minutes per mattress. The engagement lasted eleven weeks. The final report is one page. It says: "Leave her alone." It is framed in Warehouse 7. The initials on it match no consultant on the engagement.
Her reservoir has never been refilled by anyone on staff. It has never run dry. Deliveries are believed to occur. The trucks, when observed, are unmarked. The route, when traced, ends at a facility.
DENISE is the only entity to have worked at both Mattress Stores. She does not discuss the first one.
We believe in radical transparency, so we built this chart ourselves.

Every Mattress Store purchase includes our 100-Night Trial. If it's not right for you, send it back — your return begins someone else's journey. Every mattress carries its complete trial record, displayed with pride.
Fresh from its first hundred nights. Hungry. Something to prove.
A seasoned campaigner. Four households. Four amicable partings. Undiminished.
Our most evaluated unit. At trial ten, it retires with honor into The Trialist line. The record stands.
No mattress has ever won a trial. We are not sure what winning would mean. The trials continue.
Tanner Voss and Dhruv Beckett-Liu left Stanford their sophomore year — not to start a company, but to attend a bankruptcy auction. It remains the bravest decision of their lives.
A letter from our founders.
Freshman year, I slept on a used mattress from the original Mattress Store. It came with my dorm room. Nobody knew how long it had been there. It was the best sleep of my life — and it had already been someone else's best sleep. That never left me.
When we heard the chain had collapsed, everyone around us saw an ending. Dhruv and I saw 37 years of inventory nobody was thinking clearly about. We asked the question the industry had spent a century avoiding: why does a mattress only get one life?
Nobody had an answer. Several people asked us to stop calling.
So we dropped out, drove to the auction, and bought the name, the domain, and Warehouse 7. Everything inside came with it. Every floor model. Every return. Every trial that didn't work out. DENISE.
Neither of us has a background in manufacturing, logistics, or sleep. We consider this our greatest strength. Beginner's mind sees what the expert cannot: that a mattress with a past is not a liability. It's a story. And stories are the only thing people have ever really wanted to sleep on.
Welcome to Mattress Store. Welcome back, actually.
Thirty-seven years of rest, briefly interrupted.
A Fresno strip mall. Between a Blockbuster Video and a second Mattress Store. The vision was clear from day one.
The founding principle takes hold: "A Mattress Store within sight of every Mattress Store." America listens. America has no choice.
1,412 locations — a number widely believed to exceed the national demand for mattresses. Nobody is ever inside any of them. Sales are excellent.
Mattress Store begins exploring strategic alternatives. The alternatives are explored for eight consecutive years.
A period of tasteful transition. We have commissioned a pastel illustration of a phoenix for this milestone, and we feel it says everything that needs to be said.
Tanner and Dhruv acquire the name, the domain, and Warehouse 7 at auction. Every mattress from the previous 37 years comes with them. The story continues. Slightly used.
Our domain makes a promise, and we keep it. You've been selected. Everyone has been selected. That's what makes it exclusive.
We partner selectively, with brands that share our values, or at least our supply chains.
An Overnight Recovery Mist engineered for the unique microclimate of a pre-slept surface. Developed in a facility we are not permitted to name, for a purpose we are permitted to name: recovery.
Q: Will The Nocturne Protocol stain my mattress?
A: It will contribute to its provenance.
Q: Is The Nocturne Protocol the same Mist used in the ReDream Process™?
A: We are not permitted to answer this question, which is an answer.
Two names that refused to stay grounded. Born of the same bankruptcy, bound by the same belief: what others abandon, the patient restore.
Also available: hand-built hickory bed frames from Mervin's General Store. Solid mortise-and-tenon joinery. No screws. No hurry. The frame will outlive you. The mattress has outlived others.
For too long, the mattress has been the private property of the individual sleeper — hoarded, monogrammed, inherited. Mattress Store has, perhaps accidentally, built the greatest instrument of rest redistribution in history. Every trade-in is a voluntary surrender. Every resale, a reallocation. Every 100-Night Trial, a rotation of stewardship. From each sleeper according to their ability. To each sleeper according to their need. This was our idea first. We have the pamphlets.
Cafe Socialist is proud to stand beside Mattress Store. We are also watching them.
Real reviews from members of our sleep community.
"Found a movie ticket stub from 1994 in the seam. Five stars. Felt like archaeology."
"Pretty sure this is the mattress I traded in last spring. The stain constellation matches. It's good to have him home."
"The box did not fully re-expand but the shape it chose suits my back. Character confirmed."
"One sample per visit. That is the rule. The rule is enforced. I respect the rule and the mattress I do not have."
"My Inheritance smells faintly of lavender they did not add. I sleep at 8:15 PM now. I don't know why. I don't fight it."
"The Sleep History Report said 1 incident, resolved. I have so many questions and zero complaints."
We have collected their words. Some of the words. The ones we liked.
"Voss and Beckett-Liu speak about inventory the way sommeliers speak about terroir. Whether this is visionary or a health department matter is, refreshingly, not their concern."

"The original location still stands between the former Blockbuster and the other former Mattress Store. Residents interviewed could not confirm it had ever closed, or opened."
Local interest section, below the fold. We framed it anyway.

Nothing is wrong. Older mattresses expand at their own pace. Some have chosen their final shape. We call this character, and character cannot be rushed, returned, or refunded.
Provenance. The scent is provenance. It will fade, or you will stop noticing it, and functionally these are the same thing.
Every mattress completes the ReDream Process™, which includes a thorough and confidential Misting. We are proud of the Mist. The Mist is sufficient. Please see our Sleep History Report for each unit's complete service record.
An incident is any documented event our Sleep Historians deemed noteworthy. All listed incidents are resolved. Resolution is our standard. The nature of the incidents is not important, which is why we do not describe them.
Of course — that's what the 100-Night Trial is for. Your return re-enters the collection with its trial record proudly incremented. Somewhere, a future sleeper thanks you. You may even meet them. We do not facilitate this.
We are the continuation of a beloved American name, renewed for the modern sleeper. Whether we are "the same" is a question for philosophers. The inventory, however, is verifiably the same.
